April’s Bach@12 program joins masterful and unfamiliar works by the two greatest figures of the late Baroque style, Handel and J.S. Bach. Handel wrote very little music with lyrics in his native tongue, but the Nine German Arias (two of which feature here) are the centerpiece of his mature operatic works in the context of the devotional, God-in-nature themes of these texts. Bach’s Der Friede sei mit dir, appropriately set for the Easter season, features an exquisite Aria with the famous chorale “Welt, ade” (“Farewell, world”) integrated throughout, accompanied by a soaring solo violin. The program will commence with a superb Sonata for 2 violins by Johann Rosenmuller (1619-1684), the composer of the aforementioned chorale.
