San Diego Master Chorale: Puccini’s Glorious Mass

March 22 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm

$20 – $100

80 voices from the San Diego Master Chorale join the San Diego Symphony Orchestra to present Giacomo Puccini’s rarely performed Messa di Gloria, the only choral work in the Symphony’s 2018-19 Jacob’s Masterworks series. Puccini composed and premiered his “Glorious Mass” in 1880 as a graduation exercise from the Istituto Musicale Pacini. It was well received, but not performed again until 1952 (28 years after his death) in Chicago and Naples. The Symphony will complement the Mass with Joseph Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G Major.

Jacksonville Symphony conductor Courtney Lewis, who is at home in the opera house or concert hall, makes his San Diego Symphony debut in these performances.

(Due to back injury, Speranza Scapucci, previously scheduled to conduct these concerts, has had to withdraw. We wish her a speedy recovery.)

Leonardo Capalbo, tenor;
Daniel Okulitch, baritone;
Michael Sumuel, bass

Please join us 45 minutes before the concert for “What’s the Score?”, a lively talk about the composers and the repertoire, given by commentator Nuvi Mehta inside Copley Symphony Hall.
